Our history

1920-1960

Taking our name from the Hertfordshire village where the founders were billeted during the First World War, Bayford & Co began its journey in 1922 as a Leeds based coal merchant. Despite the turbulent back-drop of the General Strike, World War II and the Nationalisation of the coal industry the company thrived in the solid fuel business.

Rising from office junior to Company Chairman, Frederick Turner steered the company through those important first years and remained at the helm until the 1970s.
