In 1962, the present Chairman, David Turner, who had joined his father in the business three years earlier, started Bayford Oil. Markets were changing as heating oil became more popular and to ensure a healthy future for the company Bayford & Co readily adapted to these new customer demands alongside their existing business.
Showing early signs of a willingness to diversify and grow through acquisition, Bayford & Co took over a well established general haulage company, Herbert Knee Ltd, in 1965.
By 1968 David Turner’s younger brother John had joined Bayford; a qualified chartered accountant who was to handle the ever growing financial side of the business.
In 1969 the company decided to keep its delivery tankers busy all year round by marketing low price petrol direct to the consumer. David Turner chose Thrust Petroleum as the name for the new venture and Thrust rapidly built up a formidable chain of outlets.
Bayford Glover Ltd, an associate company, was formed along with Sidney Glover Ltd in 1969 to enable Bayford to have access to enough vehicles to fulfil huge contracts such as the supply of coal to power stations.
